Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960

The year’s most scorching gaming machines on the market tend to arrive hot on the heels of Intel releasing a new flagship processor, and that’s certainly true of 2011. In the wake of the debut of the Intel Core i7-3960X, manufacturers are falling over themselves to put out the fastest, most decked-out desktops that anyone living on a trust fund will be dying to have. One such system is the Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960, a $4,599 (street) behemoth bearing the smoking new processing and enough other new hardware to send the most trembling enthusiast into flights of ecstasy. And, oh yeah, it’s fast, too. but if you’re spending over $4,500 on a desktop, you undoubtedly want the speediest, best-designed, and most feature-packed one you can get. For its numerous virtues and outstanding performance scores, however, the Ignition X7900i-3960 is not quite that.

DesignAt least the Ignition X7900i-3960 is an eye-catcher. Its full-size tower case is cast in gleaming, glossy white with sharp accents that give each part of it a uniquely striking appearance. A band of silvery metal wraps around the top and the bottom, though it’s interrupted on the latter with a black plastic ventilation grille. You’ll find a similar grille at the bottom of the front panel: It’s covering the intake fans and is in turn covered by a series of shiny black fins. this look, in turn, is replicated on the top panel; on the two side panels, you’ll find the black grille as well, albeit without the fins. the rear panel is solid black metal, though cut with many hexagonal holes for ventilation.

Both the side panels eschew thumbscrews in favor of a key-and-knob locking mechanism. the knob is found on either side of the rear panel: Turn it one way to free the panel, which you can then just pull away; turn it back the other way to secure it shut; or use the keys (on our model, attached via a twist tie to one of the ventilation holes) to prevent anyone from getting into the computer. It’s a somewhat bulky and inelegant system, but it works.

FeaturesDashing as the Ignition X7900i-3960 may be in the attractiveness department, it’s what’s inside that counts even more—and there’s a lot. In addition to the Core i7-3960X processor cooled by a sedate-looking, Polywell-branded fan–and–heat sink combo, plugged into the Intel Desktop Board DX79SI is a whopping 32GB of 1,600MHz DDR3 memory. Because Intel’s new X79 Express chipset supports quad-channel memory, this is divided among eight DIMMs, and there are no free slots for putting in more. (Not that you’ll need to upgrade anytime soon, anyway!) Video capabilities come courtesy of two video cards using the Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 GPU design, the fastest the company makes. this gives you an enormous amount of graphics potential, but requires a lot of power—thankfully, this is provided by a 1,250-watt power supply. all these internal components are cooled by four fans: one 150mm for intake, located at the bottom of the internal drive well, and three for exhaust (two in the top panel, one in the rear panel).

There’s plenty more to be found on the front panel, too. Let’s start with the two optical drives: one LG “Super Multi Blue” model that combines Blu-ray playing and DVD recording functionality, and one traditional DVD±RW drive. In another of the 5.25-inch bays you’ll find a multiformat card reader. this leaves two bays free, and from them you can directly access the internal storage, all without having to unplug any SATA data or power cables. this gives you 240GB spread across two 120GB solid-state drives (SSDs) and an additional 3TB hard drive.

Only when you get to the collection of front-panel ports do you start to see what you’re missing: One eSATA, three USB 2.0, and headphone and microphone jacks flank the power button on the top edge—that’s right, no USB 3.0 ports. You’ll only find two of those on the rear panel, joining six USB 2.0 ports, two Gigabit LAN jacks, a FireWire port, and S/PDIF digital and 8.1-channel analog audio ports for connecting speakers. Another nice feature is the “back to BIOS” button, which lets you safely roll back any changes you make to your system’s configuration (such as overclocking).

A Logitech Cordless Desktop X100 keyboard and an associated OptiMouse complete the hardware side of the spectrum. two warranties, one for three years for parts and one for five years for labor, should keep you decently protected.

Performance Polywell Ignition X7900i 3960Any performance tweaking you may want from the X7900i-3960 you will have to do yourself: Polywell has provided no out-of-the-box overclocking for it. the good news is that because the rest of the system’s components are so advanced, you still get amazing frame rates. but overall performance isn’t going to compare with what you’ll see on an overclocked system such as the Falcon Northwest Mach V that uses this same CPU and many similar components—with one big difference that further accelerates its gaming prowess.

That would be its setup of three Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 video cards, which let it deliver results that surpass those of the Polywell. We saw this in every gaming test, whether PCMark 7 (6,154 versus 5,990), 3DMark 11 (6,505 versus 6,148 at the Extreme preset), Crysis at 1,920 by 1,080 with Very High details (75 frames per second, or fps, versus 73fps), or Lost Planet 2 at 1,920 by 1,080 with High details (168fps versus 122fps). And the Falcon Northwest’s overclocking helped it excel at non-gaming tasks, too (on the off chance you’ll ever want to do them), again trumping the Polywell in every match-up.

So if you’re looking for the best Core i7-3960X gaming machine you can find, right now the Editors’ choice Mach V takes the prize—in addition to superior performance, it also gives you more storage space (with the help of two 256GB SSDs), a more forward-thinking case design, and a more adventurous motherboard loaded with features (including a lot more USB 3.0 ports) that Intel’s doesn’t attempt. but it’s important to note that the Mach V also comes with a faint-worthy $6,899 price tag. the Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 offers an incredibly compelling alternative for $2,300 less, with most of the same pluses and only some minor minuses. the only way it will disappoint is your hunger for speed can only be sated by the most tip of the top desktop out there.

Despite Q4 Loss, AMD Finishes 2011 in the Black

1327732752 36 Despite Q4 Loss, AMD Finishes 2011 in the Black

Advanced Micro Devices weathered a shakeup of leadership to post its third profitable year in a row Tuesday, though the maker of microprocessors and graphics chips did close out 2011 with a fourth-quarter loss of $177 million related to restructuring charges and its investment in its spun-off manufacturing arm, GlobalFoundries.

AMD, which early last year introduced chips called APUs which combine CPU and GPU functionality in a single processor package, had profits of $491 million on revenue of $6.57 billion in 2011 to deliver $0.66 in earnings per share to investors. the company pulled in $1.69 billion in its fiscal fourth quarter and reported a net loss of $177 million for the three-month period.

an impairment on AMD’s investment in GlobalFoundries cost the company $209 million in the fourth quarter and restructuring charges cost another $98 million. Dirk Meyer resigned as AMD’s chief executive last January in a surprising turn of events, and was replaced on an interim basis by CFO Thomas Seifert for several months before the chip maker reached outside of its gates to hire ex-Lenovo COO Rory Read as president and CEO in August.

Read gave credit for AMD’s profitable year to strong demand for the company’s new laptop APUs, formerly code named Brazos.

“AMD shipped more than 30 million APUs in 2011, resulting in record annual notebook revenue,” he said in a statement. “The unmatched combination of computing and graphics capabilities in our low-power Brazos platform has made it our fastest ramping platform ever, paving the way for continued growth in key segments and geographies. Our server business has re-gained momentum, delivering two consecutive quarters of strong sequential growth.”

the chip maker recently released a refreshed lineup of A-Series laptop and desktop APUs and said computer makers will make systems with the new chips available in early 2012.

AMD also introduced a new CPU core architecture called Bulldozer that it used in the Opteron 4200 series and 6200 series server chips the company launched in 2011. Hewlett-Packard and Dell were among the leading server makers who used AMD’s latest Opteron chips for new systems released last year.

the company also launched its most powerful discrete graphics products for consumer systems to date, highlighted by the Radeon HD 7970 graphics chip for desktop PCs. AMD has also started to ship its new Radeon HD 7000M series GPUs and expects laptops using the chips to hit shelves in the next few months.

but revenue for AMD’s graphics segment dropped 10 percent in the fourth quarter compared with the same period in 2010, largely due to a decline in desktop and Add-in Board graphics sales, the company said.

AMD forecast a sequential revenue decline of 8 percent for the first quarter of 2012.

Intel, AMD’s larger rival in the PC chip market, last week reported record earnings for its fiscal 2011.

3D Car Shows

1327730356 70 3D Car Shows

2011 was a very successful year for Alfa Romeo that, in Europe, passed from 0.8% to 1% thanks to the Giulietta. In fact, the car’s sales reached 2.8% in Europe and 14.5% in Italy, these being the highest sales figures ever achieved by an Alfa Romeo in the hatchback segment.

In concrete terms, 2011 saw the registration of approximately 80,000 vehicles in Europe, of which 45% were in Italy (35,000). The foreign markets on which the Giulietta had its best results were the French (more than 9,200 cars), the English (more than 7,000 cars) and German (more than 6,300 cars); since its launch, worldwide orders for the Giulietta have totalled almost 140,000.

Sales of the car have witnessed a preference for the top “Distinctive” and “Exclusive” levels of fitting that represent about 90% of the total.

When it comes to the engine, sales have leaned towards the more powerful versions: for example the 170 hp 1.4 MultiAir has a sales mix of 15%, about 7 times the segment average in this power range. The most popular engine is the 105 hp 1.6 MultiJet that accounts for 35% of the total sales.

The most popular colour is Ghiaccio White that everyone will remember from the commercials and that has been chosen for 35% of the cars sold, while the reds, an essential element in the Alfa range, represent about 6% of the total.

When it comes to red, the sport packs present in the Giulietta range are highly appreciated; of the customers choosing the Distinctive/Exclusive fittings, almost half customise their Giulietta with the sport touch.

Giulietta immediately won over a very wide and diverse public; the car has been the choice of those with an average age of 40 and a medium-high level of education, 20% of whom have been women (in line with the market), while people with families represent a good half of the purchasers, compared with the segment average of a fifth. These last two figures show an inversion of the Alfa Romeo target trend, testifying to how much the car’s elegance and practicality has been appreciated by the public.

However, Giulietta has not only been praised by customers; since its launch it has received various awards from the national and international press, as you can see behind me.

The reasons behind this astonishing success are simple: Giulietta has known how to keep the promises made at its launch:

  • handling and driving pleasure,
  • quality and contained operating costs,
  • comfort and habitability,
  • active and passive safety.

Giulietta joins the tradition of the best Alfa Romeos, treasuring their heritage in terms of dynamic performance, without compromising efficiency and everyday comfort.

The secret behind this performance is the fruit of constant technological research that finds its best expression in Giulietta.

  • The compact architecture, created with highly resistant materials that have allowed containment of the weight of the structure,
  • the Dual Pinion steering wheel and sophisticated suspension systems,
  • the Alfa DNA dynamic drive selector and the award-winning Multijet and Multiair engines.

These are the innovations that have led to the project’s success. Today, the Alfa TCT transmission completes the car’s extraordinary technological offer.

For those who believe that performance must compromise safety, Giulietta breaks the mould, imposing itself as the safest car of its segment.

When talking about a car that aims for the top, both in performance and everyday use, safety has always been a priority, not only for us, but also our customers. besides Giulietta’s dynamic features, the car offers, as standard equipment on all versions, unique safety features, such as:

  • the Alfa DNA system, with electronic Q2 (a system that – when cornering – transfers the torque to the external wheel to prevent the front from understeering, thus gaining traction and improving driveability),
  • DST (that prompts the driver to make the correct manoeuvre in emergencies, through a pulse sent to the steering wheel).
  • Pre-fill (that guarantees the maximum braking promptness in the case of danger).
  • To these is added:
    • the anti-whiplash system,
    • three-point seatbelts with double pretensioners,
    • 6 airbags as standard,
    • and ESP.

All these features mean a record breaking level of active and passive safety: Giulietta has proved to be the safest hatchback ever tested by EuroNcap. this is even more important if you remember that, notwithstanding the stricter standards introduced by EuroNcap and the launch of new cars, Giulietta still remains the undisputed reference point when it comes to hatchback safety.

Giulietta reaches excellent standards thanks to top construction quality on all fronts. Driving comfort, for instance, is class leading, thanks to the suspension’s longitudinal and vertical filtering capacity.

The same is true for the sound insulation of the passenger compartment that, with 25% thicker side windows and double door seals, has proved to be the best among its direct competitors both when it comes to articulation and when travelling over cobles at 50 kph.

With regard to the interiors, Giulietta is able to combine a truly sporty look and feel with great practicality in everyday use. Its habitability is in fact a strong point: the high-quality materials employed for the dashboard and an ergonomically designed passenger compartment contribute to the passenger compartment’s high level of habitability. The luggage compartment capacity wasn’t compromised too, thanks to a very regular and totally usable boot with a width between the wheels of 1023 mm and a maximum capacity of 350 lt. These are the elements on which such a wide-ranging success is based, capable of appealing to a varied public that also includes families.

Finally, when driving Giulietta, the dynamic feeling you get is unmatched. like a true Alfa Romeo, in the roll test Giulietta recorded the lowest inclination among all its direct competitors.

There now follows a series of facts that prove the Giulietta’s construction quality. Let’s start with servicing: compared with its competitors, Giulietta is the car that needs the lowest number of service intervals during its first 3 years or 90,000 km.

All this confirms its efficiency and very low operating costs, which have led to the car being preferred not just by individuals but also by fleets, where Giulietta is the top seller in Italy and is entering the policy of all the leading European companies.

Further proof of the top quality of the Giulietta is its residual value: according to third parties such as Eurotax, Giulietta has the best resale value among cars of its segment. After twelve months, the values are for the Italian market (68.5%), the English (77.5%) and Spanish (66.9%), but also on all the other markets Giulietta is at the top when it comes to residual value among its competitors.

Further proof of the Giulietta’s construction qualities is given by customer opinion: 98% are satisfied and almost all (90%) recommend the car; 15 points above the general market average for models at their launch.

Customer survey shows that characteristics like handling, comfort and efficiency are those that satisfy them the most and their satisfaction increases with the miles covered.

It is the data regarding efficiency that testifies to the car’s excellent performance/fuel consumption ratio that will be further improved thanks to the introduction of the Alfa TCT.

If you think that performance has always weighed on efficiency and fuel consumption, Giulietta will make you change your mind: with the new Alfa TCT automatic transmission, the car achieves truly excellent figures in its segment, improving on the already great manual transmission. as you can see for both TCT equipped engines the acceleration from 0 to 62 improves whilst reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions at the same time.

Concerning the relation between CO2 emissions and the power; Giulietta is placed in the best in class area not only when it comes to the petrol engine but also the diesel. Not only regarding engines with equal power, but also when compared to versions with less power. one example among them all: when comparing the Giulietta 170hp TCT 1.4 MultiAir with a vehicle like the Golf, with the same power output and an automatic transmission (160 hp 1.4 TSI DSG), Giulietta consumes 0.8 less litres per 100 km and pollutes 18 g of CO2 per kilometer less.

To equal the Giulietta’s consumption and emission figures the Golf must reduce by 65 hp and lose the automatic transmission.

To sum up, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, heir of a great tradition, manages to match top handling and top performance with the efficiency of a car that is comfortable and cutting-edge from every point of view. so, the innovative Alfa Twin Clutch Transmission completes the car’s rich technological offer.

Giulietta maintains all the characteristics of handling, comfort and safety, further improving performance and efficiency with total respect for the environment.

All this will allow us to increase our coverage of the European hatchback market by about 10%, with peaks of 30% in Switzerland and Holland.

Worldwide, Giulietta will be launched and to also compete on markets where automatic transmissions prevail, such as the Japanese and the Australian ones.

Since the beginning of sales, demand for the Alfa TCT has been 15% of all vehicles, therefore above the European average and promising tremendous success in future sales.

Alfa TCT, the best automatic transmission in its class in terms of efficiency-to-performance ratio

The latest generation Alfa TCT (Twin Clutch Transmission) dry dual clutch automatic transmission is the class benchmark for its ratio between performance, fuel consumption and emissions, and is combined on the Giulietta with the 170 HP 1.4 TB MultiAir and 170 HP 2.0 JTDM engines. In particular, the innovative transmission ensures greater driving comfort and a sportier feeling than automatic transmissions with torque converter, but with improved efficiency and lower fuel consumption. Worth noting is that Alfa TCT improves fuel consumption even respect to the corresponding versions with manual transmission by exploiting integrated, smart engine and transmission control in order to optimise engine system performance and efficiency.

The transmission works in either all-automatic or sequential mode, as required by the driver. The user may manually manage the up and down position of the accurate, ergonomic shift stick, to which steering wheel shift paddles may be combined. In addition, the driver can customise the car’s personality using the Alfa D.N.A. driving selector to enhance its features of comfort, performance, safety and efficiency.

The Giulietta with Alfa TCT version is equipped with the 170 HP 1.4 TB MultiAir engine (“Best new Engine 2010″). Its top speed is 218 km/h with just 7.7 seconds needed to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. even if with this excellent performance, the fuel consumption and emissions are extraordinarily low: 5.2 l/100 km over a combined cycle and 121 g/km of CO2, values that make the Giulietta the most environmentally-friendly and efficient petrol-powered compact on the market, even when compared with manual gearbox versions of competitors with definitely lower power ratings and performance.

Even when fitted with the 170 HP 2.0 JTDM diesel engine, the values are record-breaking. In fact, compared to the same manual gearbox version, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h changes from 8.0 seconds to 7.9 seconds, fuel consumption (combined cycle) drops from 4.7 l/100 km to 4.5 l/100 km, while CO 2emissions reach the record level for an engine of this power equal to 119 g/km (124 g/km with the manual gearbox). The low running costs together with low fuel consumption make it the ideal choice also for company fleets.

The new Alfa TCT conceptually consists of two gearboxes in parallel, one for even gears and one for odd gears, each with its own clutch, which allows the selection and engagement of the subsequent gear while the previous one is still engaged. The gear is therefore changed with a simple, smooth yet very fast switching of the corresponding clutches, guaranteeing continuous torque delivery and therefore traction. The result is a driving comfort and sporty feeling well above that offered by conventional automatic transmissions (with torque converter) characterised by constant connection of the engine to the wheels, a faster gear shift feeling, the possibility of selecting between manual or automatic mode, all without significant power loss during shifts. furthermore, consumption is reduced by up to 10% with respect to a traditional automatic gearbox. Alfa TCT uses dry clutches allowing, in addition to other advantages, natural integration with Start&Stop, a function which is not always available with traditional automatic transmissions, and which guarantees a further benefit in terms of fuel consumption, particularly in cities.

The electro-hydraulic gear and clutch actuating system is of the high specific power and efficiency type. The virtually imperceptible shifting time can be minimised in terms of comfort in the Alfa TCT according to the position of the Alfa D.N.A. lever. The hydraulic actuating oil pressurising electric system, on the other hand, is activated only when needed in order to cut loss in the system as a whole.

The operation of the Alfa TCT is also designed to integrate the engine and the various onboard systems in the best manner. to allow for the best performance on the road, depending on the driving conditions and on the driver’s wishes, the transmission interacts with the Alfa D.N.A., braking system, engine control and vehicle stability control system (VDC). The engine control system automatically identifies road conditions, gradients and bends and optimises traction by selecting the most appropriate gear, managing engine torque delivery and modulating the brakes. with lightening-fast parameter processing, the transmission can adapt its behaviour in real time. For instance, on curves, shifts may be subjected to the vehicle speed and position of the Alfa D.N.A. lever. In Natural mode the system sets shifting on curves to maximum comfort, while in Dynamic mode, and whenever appropriate, shifting is inhibited to supply the best performance. During ASR/VDC system operation, as in All Weather mode, the engine of the Giulietta with Alfa TCT adapts its performance to ensure maximum vehicle stability. when starting off uphill from a standstill, the Alfa TCT interfaces with the Start&Stop and the braking system via the Hill Holder function to prevent the car from slipping back in undesirable manner.

With regards to ergonomics, the driver simply needs to release the brake pedal to make the car start off smoothly when parking, in queues or at the traffic lights thanks to the “Creeping” function.

Further particularities of the new Alfa TCT are flexible application, compact construction, the use of a double dry clutch (of the type which guarantees the highest efficiency in terms of consumption between automatic transmissions). this transmission is the first in the world to guarantee up to 350 Nm of transmittable engine torque, which means that it can be coupled to the remarkable 170 HP 2.0 JTDM diesel engine without limiting its performance and securing all the advantages listed above at the same time. Clutches are designed “for life” and unlike traditional clutches do not need to be replaced. if we compare “Dry” clutches with oil bath (“Wet”) ones, we can safely say that the former dissipate energy only during the actual slipping phase of the gear change and on pick-up, whereas wet clutches, which always operate in an oil bath, introduce losses due to viscous friction such as those of conventional automatic transmissions even when they are not in operation. they also require forced cooling with oil and therefore continuous energy expenditure to drive the dedicated oil pump (absent in the case of dry clutches).

Lastly, a “Wet” automatic transmission requires approximately 4.8 litres more gearbox oil than the “Dry” version, again for reasons of clutch cooling (in this way, weight is added and losses due to increase of splashing caused by the gears). when all these effects are combined, a dry transmission, like the Alfa TCT, is found to be approximately 6% more efficient than the corresponding wet one in terms of consumption.

After all, you will spend a good chunk of every day there and even though your work is not you life, it is part of your life. News flash, not everything relevant to computer is elementary. Report: The World Is Basking in the Light of Glowing Rectangles

“Americans spend the vast majority of each day staring at, interacting with, and deriving satisfaction from glowing rectangles,” The Onion reported in 2009. Three years later, the fake newspaper story isn’t so fake.

A new Google report shared with The Atlantic found that 75% or more of the adult population in the United States, great Britain, France, Germany, and Japan own a smartphone and computer. the results are summed up in the table below.

google%20smartphone%20survey%20japan thumb 615x407 76167 Report: The World Is Basking in the Light of Glowing Rectangles

The upshot is that if the developed world stares at glowing rectangles all day, the function of those rectangles vary as we hop around the globe.

For example, the UK leads the world in smartphone adoption, with nearly half of its consumers walking around with mini-computers in their pockets, according to Google. but in Japan, where a whopping 96% of adults own an advanced cell phone, although only 17% own what Google considers a true “smart phone,” such as an iPhone or Galaxy Nexus.

Japan is a specific case, Google analysts told me, where the vast majority of consumers own what Google calls a “high-specification feature phone. such devices might have GPS or music capabilities, but they lack a full Internet browser or touchscreens. These “relatively-smart” phones, while super popular in Japan, are practically non-existent in the other countries Google studied.

The real eye-grabber is in the gaming device category, where Japan holds a commanding lead. Home to Sony, Nintendo and other makers of popular gaming consoles, Japan is perhaps the world’s leading market in gaming. Consider that in 2010, Japan had bought as many PlayStation Portable (PSP) devices as the United States, despite having only 40 percent of our population. On top of that, Nintendo sold 4 million 3DS consoles within Japan in eight months … nearly as many iPads as the Apple sold in its first eight months in the United States.

A Halfway Point Retrospective news – Malevolence: The Sword of Ahkranox Game

1327719569 63 A Halfway Point Retrospective news Malevolence: The Sword of Ahkranox Game

So development of Malevolence has been getting quite heavy lately, and recent personal-life crises have led to me not being able to work on it for a couple of weeks. However, me being me, not being able to WORK on the game has just left me THINKING about the game quite a bit, and it led me to want to share a little bit of a halfway-point retrospective of this games development, and the revelations it has brought me.

But first, a brief history:

When this project was first conceived back in 2010, it was only meant to be a small project. Basically a re-imagining of might & Magic set in an infinite world – not particularly focused on graphics or too much innovation as it was only meant to be a fun project to a) sharpen my skill-set and b) be awesome fun to play. However, that didn’t last long…

Somehow (still not sure how) word started getting around that the game was being made and all these fans of might & Magic, Eye of the Beholder, Wizardry, Dungeon Master and even things like D&D and Dwarf Fortress started contacting me wanting to know more and giving me suggestions.

Well, it soon became apparent that I may just have an audience for this title, so I started posting around about it on forums and web communities and such, and the following started becoming immense (in comparison to other projects I’ve done) – even far eclipsing my last large project, Dungeon Master Pro – and after discussing it with my wife and close friends, I decided to take it the whole nine yards, make it the best I can make it and release it for sale. But to do that I’d need a team.

I teamed up with Rachel Birchnoff, a long-time artist friend of mine whom I had collaborated on MANY times in the past and also met Natalie Jane – a talented up and coming artist – while doing my groceries and together we invented the look and feel of the game. during this, I also was writing my butt off coming up with the history, the world and the structure behind the game. by this stage I had been playing around with the engine quite a bit and it was starting to piece together really well, but it was missing one key thing… Sound.

I knew absolutely no voice actors, however A short while before, a friend of mine had shown me the work of Deven Mack Jnr. and I tried for a good solid month to try and reach him. in the end, he wasn’t able to work on the project due to union commitments, however, he did give me the details of the wonderfully talented Steven Kelly who was only too happy to help out, and who also led me to get in touch with Samuel Drake, Amber Lee Connors, Rebeka Thomas, Karen Kahler, David Doyle and Benjamin Irvine who all provided voice work to go into the game, bringing it to an entirely new level. It was at this point the community clamoured for the game to look better, so I obliged, adding in better detail lighting, normal mapping, proper shadow effects, etc. It was a long process, but paid off well. the game started getting massive praise from the community, which was quite humbling.

Around this time, and sitting on a team of about 20 people at this point, we were contacted by Nicolas Lee, an indie composer based out of Seattle, who offered to do music for the game. We’d had composers on the project before and had been screwed over, which had made us wary, but Nicolas started outputting this absolutely incredible work, such as the game’s theme music:

We also got contacted out of the blue by the one and only Roland Shaw to help out with sounds in the game, which nearly made me fall off my seat when I got the email. his work has truly taken the game to a AAA level.

These two guys gave us some real renewed vigour to make this game the best it could be. We started getting comments saying how it was comparable to some AAA titles, and that it was even starting to look as good as or better than the Elder Scrolls games, which really made us feel special. We started getting requests for interviews, dozens of applications from people wanting to work on the project, some of whom we brought on, such as Saxon Bell, Jordan Glew and Thomas Martin, who are offering up their writing services to the project. on top of all this, we’ve managed to get some amazing testers, most of whom we’ve never met in the flesh, who have done an INCREDIBLE job of finding all of my mistakes and also doing up lets play videos and the like to help promote the game, which has been amazing, and they will be rewarded when it’s over!

This whole time, everything about the game has been self-funded. I’ve been pouring pretty much everything I have into this game to keep people paid who need paying, to keep services like the website running, and it’s been quite hard a lot of times – especially recently where my financial situation changed quite drastically – but this amazing group of people I have working together on the project has just kept going. Either volunteering completely or having an incredibly patient, understanding “pay me when you can” attitude which has made the project be able to run as smoothly as it can. every single team member on board has been incredibly supportive, encouraging and helpful the entire way, and it has been an incredible experience thus far. Friends and family have been giving me lavish gifts to help me be comfortable, from herb gardens to pool tables, making me feel even more humbled, but things are looking up. around March my financial situation will be changing again – this time for the better – and I’ll finally be able to catch up and really get things moving. But I’ll never forget the patience and understanding that the team has given me thus far.

But now, the retrospective that I promised.

During this last 18 months or so, I’ve learned a lot of interesting things. Malevolence has been a real life changer for me, and there have been certain events and revelations that have come to light:

1) Before this, the closest person I knew to the games industry was one of the network admins at Pandemic Studios before they closed down. Since starting this project I’ve met a heap of professional voice over artists, as well as some people in the games industry such as Alistair from Bane Games, Dan (formerly) from Halfbrick Games, Scott from Creature Interactive, Dave from Desura, Daniel from GamersGate, Joshua from Techzwn, James from CoG, Roland from Spicy Horse, all of Bubblegum Interactive, Blowfish Studios, Hedgegrove Enterprises and many more.

2) Malevolence was nominated for the Indie Game of the Year awards of 2011, which was extremely unexpected. at the time our game was only barely together and no-where near finished, but still, the community spoke and we were nominated. We didn’t hope to win anything, but just to be nominated at such an early stage was such an amazing rush.

3) We made the cover of the inaugral 2012 TGC newsletter and have since become a household name over there. TGC is a really big community and those guys have been fantastic.

4) We were invited to present the game at the GAME festival in Sydney. We put ourselves into debt to go down there and do it, but it was totally worth it, just to be around the other game devs and see joe public (who had never seen the game before) give it such an overwhelmingly positive reaction – some people even stood there and watched the trailer on loop 3 or 4 times with their mouths open. It was amazing.

5) We knew the project was going to be big. I don’t think that we could have possibly know just HOW big. It has at some points become quite overwhelming and I’ve had to take a break or two here and there, but the clamouring of the public for me to get back to work usually motivates me to get going again.

6) I learned that the public in general is unforgiving, and don’t read. Some people have posted comments on blog entries asking questions which are actually answered in the blog entry they’re commenting on, others have outright told us our game looks like crap. more than anything, people have said that what we’re trying to do is impossible. We know it IS possible. We have provided evidence that it is, but like I said, people don’t read. However, the negative comments have been about 1% or 2% of the feedback. Haters gonna hate, but in the end, they don’t have an IOTY nominated game and I do icon wink A Halfway Point Retrospective news Malevolence: The Sword of Ahkranox Game

7) the game has given me a whole new understanding of the word ‘dedication’. for those of you who read these blogs every time, you’ll have read about my frustrations, difficulties and roadblocks along the way, but the team has… not… stopped.

icon cool A Halfway Point Retrospective news Malevolence: The Sword of Ahkranox Game the game has also made us re-assess what ‘success’ means for a game developer. I’m not making this as my day job. It’s a side project, so I don’t need it to be a smash hit to live. Because of that, the money that the game can potentially make is secondary to making a great game. when all is said and done I want Malevolence to be the best game that it can be, and that is MY ideal game. A lot of the things I’m doing on the project, other people don’t agree with. But when all is said and done, that’s their problem, not mine. As I said earlier, the VAST majority of feedback is extremely positive, and I’m very proud of that.

9) Finally, no matter how much I’ve enjoyed working on this, I’ve learned that I’ll be super glad when it’s over. Yes, I have plans for expansion packs and a sequel, but I’ll still be bloody glad when it’s over…

Well, if you read this far then good on you! We’ll be releasing a new alpha version relatively soon and it’ll have the outdoors in it (at least in early form) so you may get to see some interesting lets play videos from Hyfrydle32. We’ll put up a more functional blog post quite soon, as we’re playing with water bodies at the moment and will actually HAVE something to show for ourselves haha

Anyway, thanks for reading. I hope it was insightful.

Another major benefit of online computer solutions is that you get the chance to interact with the expert team either through voice chat or e-mail. But pundits repeatedly warn that prior to opting for accessories it is best to know well your own computer. Graphics Cards: Most "out of the box" computers have an onboard graphics card built in; this simply means it can display 2D games, videos, and websites with ease. Viruses get spread on a network easily because of the interconnectivity of workstations. Judging from what fellows say regarding desktop, what I have is a sour stomach bordering on cloud computing pdf. The platform entertains both home and business users alike. Key features: 6??x 10??working area operates with latest screen size Exquisite slim pad design 1024-level pressure sensitivity for all shapes and thickness control Make handwriting notes/drawings efficiently in e-mail, MSN, documents, or any application program Vista plug and play; handwriting recognition compatible, pen flicks, digital inking in Office and snipping functions for convenient operation Works with any screen size: lets you draw or sketch more precisely.
